BAE Systems is seeking a Principal Safety Engineer with current and relevant (previous five years) experience working with one or more of the following Trident II D5 subsystems: Fire Control, Navigation, Missile, or Launcher. Experience involving the Ohio Replacement Program is desired. In our systems integration role, we play a primary role in Nuclear Weapon Safety, and provide recommendations directly to the Strategic Systems Program Chief Engineer regarding all aspects of this critical discipline. Our systems safety assessment role is foundational to everything else we do, and the Principal Safety Engineer will work with our customer to ensure the safety program remains highly credible and relevant to enterprise needs and opportunities.
Highly qualified candidates who reside outside the metro Washington DC area and who are willing to travel frequently as part of a comprehensive telecommuting agreement, will be considered.
Interested candidates must demonstrate a comprehensive familiarity with weapon system safety assessment, system safety processes and approaches employed within the Strategic Systems Programs (SSP) enterprise, and the ability to communicate complex concepts in a clear and concise manner. The role will involve frequent participation in enterprise-wide working groups, technical exchange meetings, and safety studies, and offers a unique opportunity to work across the breadth of the SWS, performing a vital systems engineering function. The candidate will be expected to contribute to an environment of innovation, constructively challenging current processes and methodologies where there are opportunities for improved efficiency and quality.
Specific technical experience and knowledge should include extensive familiarity with MIL-STD-882, familiarity with the operation and processes of the Nuclear Weapons System Safety Group (NWSSG), Weapon Systems Explosive Review Board (WSERB), System Safety Program Management, System Safety Hazard Analysis, System Safety Design, Special Safety Studies, Operational Safety Reviews, and Independent Software Nuclear Safety Analysis. Knowledge of Unauthorized Launch Analysis and Inadvertent Launch Analysis is preferred.
The Principal Safety Engineer will also support engineering career development initiatives, focusing on sustaining organizational knowledge and promoting a culture of innovation. Mentoring and recruiting are critical aspects of this responsibility.
Although not required, those candidates who possess an active Top Secret security clearance, who have systems safety working credentials and applicable certifications, broad technical experience with U.S. Navy''s Strategic Weapon Systems and have Strategic Systems Programs (SSP) experience, will be given highest priority.

Must have education/skills/
Experience:
Bachelor''s degree in an engineering discipline and 10 or more years related professional work experience
Active DoD Secret clearance and eligibility to obtain a DoD Top Secret security clearance
Current and relevant (previous five years) experience working with one or more of the following TRIDENT II D5 Subsystems: Fire Control, Navigation, Missile or Launcher Knowledge of systems engineering principles
Experience with implementing MIL-STD-882
Understanding of the role and implementation practices of the NWSSG and WSESRB
Excellent presentation (verbal and written) skills
Willingness and ability to travel up to 20% (more if working remotely)
Team and organizational leadership experience
